A Guide to Modern Scams | How to Stay One Step Ahead

As scams continue to evolve, staying informed is one of the best ways to protect your financial well-being. Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated, using increasingly convincing tactics to gain access to personal and financial information. A little awareness can go a long way in preventing costly mistakes.

Common Scams to Watch For

Impersonation Scams (Banks, Advisors, or Government Agencies)

Scammers may pose as your bank, investment firm, a government agency, or even someone from our office. These messages often create a sense of urgency and request sensitive information or immediate financial action.

How to protect yourself: Never share sensitive information or authorize transfers based on an unsolicited call, text, or email. When in doubt, hang up and contact the institution directly using a trusted number.

Email and Text Phishing Attacks

These messages often look legitimate and may include links designed to capture your login credentials or personal data.

How to protect yourself: Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading attachments. Double-check the sender’s email address and go directly to official websites instead of using embedded links.

Investment Scams and “Too Good to Be True” Offers

Fraudsters may promote exclusive or high-return investment opportunities with little to no risk.

How to protect yourself: Be cautious of unsolicited investment offers. Always discuss any new opportunity with me before taking action.

Tech Support and Remote Access Scams

You may receive a pop-up or call claiming your computer has a virus, prompting you to grant remote access.

How to protect yourself: Be cautious when interacting with individuals you haven’t met in person, especially if financial requests arise.

Romance and Social Media Scams

Scammers build relationships online and eventually request money or financial assistance.

How to protect yourself: Be cautious when interacting with individuals you haven’t met in person, especially if financial requests are involved.

How We Help Protect You

Protecting your personal and financial information is a top priority for our office. Here are some of the steps we take:

  • In our office, we maintain security best practices, including locking files and shredding any paper containing sensitive information.
  • We will only take account instructions verbally, directly speaking with the actual account holder. Should we receive a voicemail message or an email (or other written request), we’ll always call you back to confirm your wishes. We will not proceed with any instructions until we’re able to connect with you personally.
  • We’ve enhanced and upgraded our email capabilities with more robust encryption, authentication, and security monitoring.
  • We utilize a multi-platform auditing and monitoring tool to help identify any security gaps in our existing systems.
  • We have access to an expert team of cyber security consultants to help continue advancing and optimizing protective measures.

A Simple Rule of Thumb

If something feels urgent, secretive, or too good to be true, take a step back and verify before acting.

If you ever receive a suspicious request involving your finances, or something that just doesn’t feel right, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us first. We're always here to help you think it through.

Your security is just as important as your financial plan.
