Starting From Zero

Building a Wealth Management Firm in San Antonio
By Elizabeth Valenti, CLTC, AIF®

Marking our firm’s 15th anniversary this year has given me the opportunity to reflect on how it all began.  I moved to San Antonio from Michigan fifteen years ago with a clear vision, a business plan, and very little else. I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t have family, an existing network, or a book of business waiting for me. What I did have was a belief that if I focused on building relationships and always doing the right thing for people, the business would follow.

Starting a wealth management firm from scratch in a new city was both exciting and humbling. In the early days, every conversation was an opportunity not just to explain what I did and the business I envisioned to grow, but to earn trust.   I believed deeply in the mission statement in my original business plan: “We are committed to becoming the firm of choice in financial services”.  From the beginning, my goal was simple: to build genuine relationships by telling our story to as many people as humanly possible.  When you’re new to a community, like I was, reputation is everything, and it’s something others decide over time, based on how you show up and how you treat people.

Not long after moving to San Antonio, I remember a conversation that stayed with me. Someone asked an honest but pointed question: “What are you going to do if you fail?”  It wasn’t asked unkindly, but it forced me to reflect.  The answer I realized, wasn’t about having a backup plan. It was about commitment. I wasn’t here to “try” something and see how it went. I was here to build something meaningful, to earn trust, and to be all‑in on making it work. That moment clarified my resolve and strengthened my motivation to succeed in a new city.

There were moments when progress felt slow and the challenges seemed overwhelming. But looking back, those early years were critical. They taught me that credibility is built quietly and consistently, often when no one is watching.   I learned success in San Antonio, and probably most other places, is about being reliable, respectful, and committed to building long term relationships. That understanding has shaped how we built our firm and how we serve our clients.

One of the most meaningful moments in our journey was when the first advisors and staff members chose to join us. When you’re building something from the ground up, those early team members matter immensely. They take a leap of faith, and they help define the culture.  As our firm grew, we were intentional about adding people who aligned with our core values: Growth, Respect, Excellence, All‑In, and Trust. Skills can be taught, but values cannot.

Surrounding ourselves with quality people who shared our commitment to those principles elevated everything, from how we served clients to how we supported one another as a team. I believe our success today is the result of our team all rowing in the same direction, united by shared purpose and mutual respect.

I’m deeply grateful to the advisors and administrative professionals who have joined our firm over the years. Their belief in the vision, commitment to our values, and dedication to our clients made it possible for us to grow into the firm we are today. Our team shows up every day with professionalism, care, and a shared sense of purpose.  We are helping clients achieve lasting financial peace & well-being that would be difficult to achieve on their own.

I’m also thankful for the mentors and friends who supported me during the early transition to San Antonio, who helped steady the foundation as this firm was taking shape. Some of those individuals are now retired, and others were part of the journey for a season, but each played an important role at exactly the right time. They know who they are and I remain grateful for their guidance, encouragement and lasting positive impact they have had on both my life and our firm.

Over the past 15 years of building our firm, many lessons have been learned.  Some easily and others learned through experience. A few stand out:

1. Timing is everything.

One of the most meaningful lessons I’ve learned is the right people join at the right time, and it’s not always the first time paths cross. Many of our advisors and team members chose to affiliate months, and in some cases years, after our initial meeting. Those early conversations mattered, even when nothing happened immediately. Trust takes time, and looking back, the timing of those decisions was critical, for them and for us. It reinforced the importance of patience, consistency, and staying true to who we are.  I’ve also learned sometimes the timing is never right, and that’s okay too. Not every conversation leads to an affiliation, and not every relationship is meant to move forward, but each one offers perspective and lessons to carry into the next conversation.

2. Reputation matters and not everyone is going to like you.

Not everyone is going to agree with your decisions, and not everyone is going to like you. I’ve learned leadership requires conviction and clarity, especially when protecting firm culture and values. Reputation is earned by being fair and principled over time.  One of the most grounding lessons I’ve learned is the importance of remembering who you are and where you come from. There will be moments when people say hurtful or untrue things, and I’ve learned ultimately, it’s the way you’ve shown up for people year after year others rely on when deciding who you are.  In the end, it’s not words but years of consistent actions that define reputation and character.

3. It’s normal to want to quit, but don’t quit in the valley.

Every meaningful journey includes moments of doubt. I’ve learned decisions shouldn’t be made at the lowest points, when perspective is limited. The only time to truly evaluate direction is when you’re on higher ground, because this is when you can see the full picture clearly and think objectively.  Years ago, I was invited to a dinner where a San Antonio Spur was asked if the road to becoming a professional athlete had ever made him want to quit. Without hesitation, he said, “I feel like quitting every day, but I don’t.” Real clarity comes only after you push through the valley and regain perspective.

 4. Culture & Core Values are the top priority.

The most important decisions we make are about people. Protecting our firm culture and devoting the time to ensure alignment with our core values of Growth, Respect, Excellence, All‑In, and Trust is, I believe, why we have been ranked as a Best Place to Work in San Antonio for the past 7 years. Before extending an offer, cultural alignment is essential. Skills can be developed but core values must already be there.  In our client relationships, we are intentional about sharing exactly who we are, what we believe, and the way we serve.

*The 2025 Best Places to Work in San Antonio is issued by the San Antonio Business Journal. Nominees may have applied for the award and winners are chosen through an online survey that measures employee engagement. Fifteen years ago, this journey began with a leap of faith.  I’m incredibly proud of the firm we’ve built, because it’s our team members who make Platinum Wealth Solutions of Texas the exceptional firm it is.  We’ve had the privilege of working with individuals and families through some of the most important moments of their lives, and we approach that responsibility with care, accountability, and trust.  I’m filled with gratitude for the clients who have placed their confidence in us, for the advisors and staff who believed in the vision and helped bring it to life, and for the San Antonio community that welcomed us.

I would be remiss if I did not give thanks and credit to God for His guidance, the doors He chose to either open or close for the right reasons, the quality people He put in my path, and the success He has bestowed upon our firm the past 15 years.

Today and looking forward, our firm, advisors, and staff remain committed to making a positive impact in the lives of our clients and the San Antonio community.   It is my personal hope that every client we serve and every teammate who joins us can one day say they cannot imagine what their lives, or their careers, would have looked like had our doors not opened in San Antonio 15 years ago.
